NCC Opens 6GHz, 60GHz Bands In 2026–2030 Spectrum Plan

THE Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced the National Spectrum Roadmap 2026–2030, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and predictability in spectrum regulation.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, made this known on Monday at a spectrum roadmap stakeholders’ consultation forum in Abuja.
According to Maida, the roadmap outlines Nigeria’s spectrum management priorities over the next five years and includes guidelines for opening the lower 6GHz and 60GHz licence-exempt frequency bands.
Represented by the Head of Spectrum Administration, Atiku Lawal, the NCC boss said the initiative would improve quality of service and support the country’s growing digital needs.
“Our goal is to create a regulatory environment that is transparent and predictable, one that supports investment, encourages innovation and expands access,” Maida said.
He explained that opening additional frequency bands would unlock new capacity for high-speed broadband, particularly for data-intensive services and emerging technologies.
Maida emphasised that spectrum plays a foundational role in Nigeria’s digital economy, supporting mobile networks, broadband services, satellite communications and public safety systems.
“Every video call, online classroom, digital transaction and connected device depends on spectrum,” he said, adding that the roadmap prepares Nigeria for future data demands across residential, commercial and public sectors.
Also addressing stakeholders, Executive Commissioner for Technical Services, Abraham Oshadami, said the NCC is committed to ensuring spectrum resources serve both urban and rural communities.
He noted that the consultation forum reflects the commission’s focus on foresight, fairness and alignment with national development objectives.
Earlier, Atiku Lawal described the roadmap as a long-term strategic framework for Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Speaking on behalf of Huawei, Dr. Lola Fafore said the roadmap would strengthen broadband penetration, stimulate innovation and contribute significantly to economic growth.
The two-day consultation forum brings together regulators, operators, technology firms and other stakeholders to deliberate on policies that will shape Nigeria’s digital future.
