₦50 Million Prize Pool, Seven Cars Up For Grabs As Kano Horse Race Begins

Renewed Hope Horse Race Tournament Begins in Kano with ₦50 Million Prize Pool
Kano Hosts Three-Day Racing Spectacle
THE Renewed Hope Horse Race Tournament has commenced in Kano, bringing together riders, horse owners and enthusiasts for a three-day competition that organisers say will rank among Nigeria’s biggest horse racing events.
The tournament, which runs from 25 to 27 June, features 20 races across multiple categories, with competitors vying for cash prizes worth nearly ₦50 million as well as seven brand-new vehicles.
The competition is expected to attract participants from different parts of the country, reinforcing Kano’s long-standing reputation as one of Nigeria’s traditional centres of horse racing.
Organisers Highlight Kano’s Rich Racing Heritage
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the National Coordinator of the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria, Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar Bidda, described Kano as a historic home of horse racing, noting that organised competitions have been held at the state’s racecourse since the administration of former Governor Audu Bako.
According to him, preserving the sport’s heritage while introducing modern standards remains central to the federation’s development strategy.
Bidda said this year’s tournament includes races for both the Arewa local breed and the Nigerian breed, reflecting ongoing efforts to preserve indigenous horse breeds while encouraging greater participation in competitive racing.
New Starting Gate Introduced
A major highlight of this year’s championship is the introduction of the starting gate, an internationally recognised technology being deployed in Nigerian horse racing for the first time.
The innovation ensures that all horses begin each race simultaneously, eliminating potential advantages or disadvantages at the start of competition and improving fairness.
Organisers believe the adoption of the starting gate aligns Nigerian horse racing with international best practices and enhances the credibility of domestic competitions.
Boosting the Future of Horse Racing
The federation expressed optimism that the combination of improved officiating standards, substantial prize money and increased investment would encourage broader participation in the sport.
Officials also believe the tournament will strengthen Nigeria’s profile within the international horse racing community while creating opportunities for riders, breeders and horse owners.
As competition continues, participants will battle for honours across various race categories in what organisers hope will become a benchmark for future editions of the tournament.
