Super Falcons Get Major Boost Ahead Of WAFCON Title Defence

Welfare Initiative Targets Successful WAFCON Campaign
NIGERIA’S preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) received a significant boost on Wednesday as the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) unveiled a seven-member Welfare Committee to support the Super Falcons during their title defence campaign in Morocco.
The committee was constituted after a strategic meeting in Abuja involving NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade and NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, with both institutions emphasizing the importance of creating an enabling environment for the team ahead of the continental competition.
The newly established body will be chaired by NFF Executive Committee member Aisha Falode, while Ruth David will serve as secretary. Other members include Rt. Hon. Margaret Icheen, Babagana Kalli, Emeka Iyama, Aderonke Tinuoye and Tobechukwu Oluchi.
Presidency Throws Weight Behind Falcons
Speaking on the development, Olopade disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu are fully supportive of the Super Falcons’ ambition to retain their continental crown.
According to him, the welfare committee was designed to complement the efforts of the NFF by ensuring that the players remain focused on football while administrative and welfare concerns are effectively managed.
He stressed that welfare remains a crucial ingredient for success at elite competitions, noting that a motivated and well-supported squad stands a better chance of delivering positive results on the international stage.
Olopade said the initiative demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to helping the nine-time African champions achieve another successful outing in Morocco.
NFF Hails Landmark Support Structure
The NFF welcomed the creation of the committee, describing it as an innovative step in the administration of women’s football in Nigeria.
Dr Sanusi noted that it was the first time a dedicated welfare committee had been established for the senior women’s national team ahead of a major tournament, describing the move as evidence of growing institutional support for women’s football.
He explained that the committee would not replace existing officials or technical personnel but would instead provide additional support to ensure smooth operations throughout the competition.
Focus on Maintaining Continental Dominance
Nigeria remains the most successful nation in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and will enter the tournament as one of the favourites.
The establishment of the welfare committee reflects a broader effort by sports authorities to strengthen team management structures and create conditions that allow the players to concentrate fully on their quest for another continental triumph.
With government backing, administrative support and renewed attention to player welfare, the Super Falcons are expected to head into Morocco with confidence as they seek to reinforce their dominance of African women’s football.
