₦5.9 Billion Boost For Schools As Akwa Ibom Targets Education Overhaul

Major Funding Push for Basic Education
THE State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in Akwa Ibom State has unveiled a sweeping reform agenda following the release of ₦5.9 billion approved by Governor Umo Eno to revitalise basic education across the state.
Announcing the development in Uyo, SUBEB Chairman, Anietie Etuk, said the funding will support intervention projects spanning 2025 and 2026, marking a decisive shift toward holistic school development.
From Piecemeal Repairs to Full-Scale Upgrades
Etuk explained that the state government is abandoning incremental renovations in favour of comprehensive upgrades that address all aspects of the learning environment.
Under the new approach, intervention projects will include classroom construction and rehabilitation, water supply, sanitation facilities, and electricity provision—aimed at creating conducive and modern learning spaces for pupils.
Teacher Recruitment and Curriculum Reform
A central pillar of the reform is the approval to recruit 1,000 additional teachers to address staffing shortages in public schools. Priority, according to SUBEB, will be given to ICT and computer science specialists to strengthen digital education.
The board also disclosed plans to introduce a new primary school curriculum, described as a long-overdue reform designed to enhance teaching quality and align learning with contemporary educational needs.
Security Concerns and Community Responsibility
Despite the scale of investment, authorities expressed concern over recurring cases of vandalism and theft affecting school infrastructure.
Etuk urged host communities to take ownership of government projects, warning that continued destruction of facilities could undermine reform efforts and waste public resources.
Land Disputes and Administrative Challenges
The SUBEB Chairman also highlighted ongoing disputes between communities and school authorities over land ownership, noting that such conflicts are disrupting school administration and affecting student enrollment.
He called for stronger collaboration between community leaders and School Management Committees to ensure smooth school operations.
Stakeholder Reactions and Outlook
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), through its chairman Nsibiet John, commended the government’s commitment, particularly the planned teacher recruitment, which is expected to benefit underserved rural communities.
With reforms targeting infrastructure, manpower, and curriculum, the state government says it aims to strengthen foundational education and improve long-term learning outcomes.
