Corporate Support Fuels Fresh Sporting Action
COMPETITIVE action has intensified across Nigeria’s basketball and tennis scenes as two major Zenith Bank-backed tournaments get underway in Lagos.
The 2026 Zenith Bank/NBBF Women’s Basketball League opened its Atlantic Conference with defending champions Dolphins Basketball Club and former champions First Bank recording victories.
At the same time, the Zenith Bank 2026 Team Tennis Tournament is set to begin at Ikoyi Club 1938, bringing together 64 players for a week-long competition.
The two events highlight the growing role of corporate sponsorship in sustaining competitive sports and providing athletes with platforms to develop and compete.
Dolphins Begin Title Defence With Victory
Dolphins Basketball Club made a winning start to its title defence at the National Stadium in Lagos.
The defending champions defeated First Deep Water 59-46 in a competitive opening encounter.
First Deep Water kept the contest close for long periods, but Dolphins maintained their composure when it mattered most and eventually secured a 13-point victory.
Dolphins president Olumide Oyedeji welcomed the result but said the team still had room for improvement as the championship progresses.
The defending champions are scheduled to face Bayelsa Blue Whales in their next game.
First Bank Survive Royal Aces Test
First Bank also opened its campaign with victory, although the former champions had to withstand a strong challenge from Royal Aces.
The Lagos-based side prevailed 58-56 after a closely fought contest in which neither team established a commanding advantage.
First Bank’s ability to remain composed during the decisive stages ultimately produced a narrow two-point victory.
Other fixtures include First Bank against IGP Queens, MFM against Victoria Queens and Royal Aces against First Deep Water.
Victoria Queens produced the most convincing result of the opening day, defeating IGP Queens 69-39.
Tennis Tournament Brings 64 Players Together
While basketball action continues at the National Stadium, tennis enthusiasts are preparing for another Zenith Bank-sponsored competition at Ikoyi Club 1938.
The 2026 Zenith Bank Team Tennis Tournament begins at the club’s Tennis Section and will run until 21st August.
Organisers have entered 64 players into the competition. They will compete in eight teams for the tournament title.
The draw took place during the weekend, giving participants a clear path into the competition.
Ikoyi Club Tennis Section chairman Victor Onyenkpa said the tournament would provide members with an opportunity to enjoy competitive tennis throughout the week.
He expressed confidence that the matches would produce quality entertainment for both participants and spectators.
Sponsorship & the Sporting Ecosystem
The simultaneous staging of the basketball league and tennis tournament underlines how private-sector investment can complement traditional sports structures.
The basketball competition provides professional female players with regular high-level competition, while the tennis tournament creates another platform for athletes and enthusiasts to test their abilities.
Beyond the immediate contests, such events can strengthen sporting communities by providing structured competition, exposure and opportunities for athletes to remain active.
For Zenith Bank, its involvement places the institution alongside two established sporting platforms with strong followership.
As basketball teams pursue league honours and tennis players battle for supremacy at Ikoyi Club, the tournaments offer another demonstration of how sustained corporate backing can help keep competitive sports programmes active in Nigeria.
