Kaduna Marks World Malaria Day with Prevention Push
THE Kaduna State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling malaria through improved environmental sanitation, stressing that cleaner communities remain critical to reducing infections.
The renewed focus came as the state joined global observance of World Malaria Day on 25 April, a campaign aimed at sustaining awareness and accelerating efforts to eliminate one of Africa’s deadliest preventable diseases.
Officials said the government is prioritising sanitation measures designed to reduce mosquito breeding sites, particularly stagnant water, blocked drainage channels and unmanaged waste.
Sanitation Seen as First Line of Defence
Public health authorities noted that malaria prevention extends beyond hospital treatment and mosquito nets, requiring stronger environmental management in homes and public spaces.
By improving drainage systems, clearing refuse dumps and promoting cleaner surroundings, officials believe mosquito populations can be significantly reduced.
Experts say sanitation remains one of the most cost-effective community tools against malaria transmission, especially in densely populated urban centres.
Community Awareness and Shared Responsibility
The government also encouraged residents to take ownership of hygiene practices by keeping compounds clean, covering water containers and reporting blocked drainage channels.
Officials said sustainable malaria control depends on cooperation between government agencies, local councils and households.
Health advocates have repeatedly stressed that behaviour change at community level can complement medical interventions such as diagnosis, treatment and use of insecticide-treated nets.
Nigeria’s Wider Malaria Challenge
Nigeria continues to carry one of the world’s heaviest malaria burdens, making prevention campaigns especially important.
Recent federal health initiatives have also focused on scaling preventive medicines and broader malaria elimination strategies.
