Warri Delineation Crisis: Ijaw Leader Backs Dialogue, Calls For Lasting Unity

Warri Peace Process Gains Fresh Endorsement
A prominent Ijaw leader and stakeholder in the Warri Federal Constituency, Chief Michael Johnny, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for their roles in easing tensions surrounding the controversial ward delineation exercise in Warri.
Speaking during a world press conference, Johnny described the interventions of both leaders as critical steps toward preserving peace and strengthening inter-ethnic relations among the Ijaw, Itsekiri and Urhobo communities.
According to him, the efforts of the Federal Government and the Delta State Government have helped create an atmosphere conducive to dialogue following the Supreme Court judgment and the subsequent ward delineation exercise conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Tinubu’s Intervention and Search for Consensus
Johnny commended President Tinubu for facilitating discussions among leaders and representatives of the major ethnic groups in the Warri Federal Constituency.
He noted that the consultations provided a platform for grievances to be addressed through peaceful engagement rather than confrontation, adding that the process demonstrated the importance of inclusive leadership in resolving sensitive political disputes.
According to him, the consultations produced resolutions that were accepted by representatives of the various ethnic nationalities, who subsequently prepared and submitted a report reflecting areas of consensus.
He argued that such engagement was necessary to safeguard democratic processes and ensure that electoral activities could proceed without disruption.
Oborevwori’s Peace-Building Role
The Ijaw leader also reserved special commendation for Governor Oborevwori, whom he described as a grassroots-oriented leader with a clear understanding of the importance of peace in driving development.
Johnny noted that the governor’s decision to convene peace meetings among stakeholders contributed significantly to reducing tensions and encouraging mutual understanding among the ethnic groups.
According to him, the governor’s approach reflected a commitment to dialogue, reconciliation and stability, all of which are essential for sustained socio-economic progress in the oil-rich region.
Traditional Institutions and Reconciliation
Johnny also acknowledged efforts by the Olu of Warri to strengthen relationships with neighbouring kingdoms, describing the initiative as an important contribution to regional harmony.
He stressed that traditional institutions continue to play a vital role in promoting peaceful coexistence and resolving misunderstandings before they escalate into larger conflicts.
The Ijaw leader urged traditional rulers across the region to continue serving as agents of peace and unity, emphasizing that no community benefits from violence or prolonged disputes.
Beyond Ethnic Differences: The Development Challenge
While discussing the future of the Warri Federal Constituency, Johnny argued that poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment pose greater threats to the people than ethnic disagreements.
“Our challenge is poverty and underdevelopment. That is what we should all be confronting together,” he stated.
He maintained that residents across ethnic lines share common socio-economic concerns and should focus their collective energy on attracting development, improving infrastructure and creating opportunities for young people.
Security Agencies Urged to Sustain Vigilance
Despite the relative calm, Johnny expressed concern over remarks allegedly attributed to former Ologbotsere of Warri Kingdom, Chief Ayiri Emami, which he claimed could generate unnecessary tensions.
He called on security agencies, including the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Navy and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to remain vigilant and prevent any attempt to undermine the peace process.
According to him, maintaining stability remains crucial as political stakeholders prepare for the next phase of electoral activities directed by INEC.
Commitment to a Peaceful Future
Reaffirming the commitment of the Ijaw people to peaceful coexistence, Johnny urged all parties to respect agreements reached during consultations and support ongoing reconciliation efforts.
He expressed confidence that the peaceful environment fostered by the interventions of President Tinubu and Governor Oborevwori would strengthen democratic participation, attract investment and promote sustainable development across Warri and the wider Niger Delta region.
For Johnny, the lesson is clear: lasting peace remains the foundation upon which meaningful development, political stability and economic progress can be built.
