THE Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association has called on INEC and security agencies to help ensure a credible 2027 general election.
The association made the call during a road walk for good governance and credible elections in Abuja.
The event formed part of activities marking its 2026 International Convention.
Speaking during the exercise, the association’s Global President, Prof. Ikechukwu Umeh, stressed the importance of citizens’ participation in the democratic process.
He said democracy could function effectively only when citizens exercised their civic rights.
Umeh therefore urged political parties, INEC and voters to comply with electoral laws before, during and after the 2027 elections.
Beyond voting, he said the association wanted government to ensure that Nigerians benefited from the dividends of democracy.
Similarly, the Chairman of the 2026 Convention Planning Committee, Dr. Obinna Uyaemezina, urged INEC to follow electoral rules strictly.
He also called for public support for the commission as it prepares for the elections.
According to him, credible elections remain central to democratic governance.
Uyaemezina added that good governance should translate into improvements in areas such as healthcare, education, roads, security and poverty reduction.
Meanwhile, the FCT Chapter Chairperson of the association, Mrs. Nonye Umeodika, urged security agencies to remain impartial during elections.
She also called on security personnel to reject corruption and electoral malpractice.
Umeodika argued that voters would be more willing to participate when they felt secure at polling centres.
Consequently, she urged Nigerians to reject voter apathy and participate in the electoral process.
The Media and Publicity Sub-Committee Chairman, Stanley Nwosu, described the road walk as part of the association’s advocacy for transparent governance and credible elections.
He called on INEC, government authorities and security agencies to take the necessary steps to strengthen public confidence in the 2027 poll.
Nwosu also encouraged members who could not attend the road walk to support the association’s advocacy for a credible electoral process.
