State Police Proposal Clears House With Overwhelming Support

House Approves State Police Bill
THE House of Representatives has passed the State Police Bill, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to reform its security architecture and strengthen local policing structures.
The bill secured overwhelming support during plenary, with 289 lawmakers voting in favour and only four opposing the proposal. The decision followed deliberations on key constitutional amendment items before the lower chamber.
The legislation seeks to establish state-controlled police formations across the federation, a proposal that has generated extensive national debate over the years due to concerns about security challenges and the effectiveness of centralized policing.
Strong Legislative Backing
Proceedings in the chamber showed broad bipartisan support for the bill, reflecting growing calls for a more decentralized security framework capable of responding to local threats.
Lawmakers had earlier agreed that voting on critical constitutional amendment proposals would be conducted manually. When the matter was put to vote, 290 members were present in the chamber, underscoring the significance attached to the legislation.
The outcome represents one of the most decisive votes on a major security-related reform in recent years.
Push for Decentralised Policing
Advocates of state policing have consistently argued that Nigeria’s security challenges require local solutions and greater involvement of state governments in maintaining law and order.
Supporters believe state police would improve intelligence gathering, enhance rapid response capabilities, and strengthen community engagement in crime prevention efforts.
However, critics have previously raised concerns about possible political interference and the potential misuse of state-controlled security agencies by governors.
Constitutional Amendment Process Continues
Although the bill has scaled a major hurdle in the House of Representatives, it remains subject to additional constitutional amendment procedures before becoming law.
Further legislative consideration and approvals are expected as the National Assembly continues work on constitutional reforms aimed at addressing governance, security, and federalism issues.
The House vote is nevertheless being viewed as a major step toward one of Nigeria’s most debated security reforms.
