Semi-Final Dream At Stake As Nigeria’s Flamingos Battle Venezuela In Morocco

By TAYO TAIWO (T. T.) OLUWOLE
NIGERIA’S U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, took on Venezuela in a crucial quarter-final encounter at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026 Sunday 1 November.
With a place in the semi-finals at stake, both teams approached the contest determined to extend their campaigns. However, Nigeria will be hoping to maintain their impressive recovery after an uneven start to the tournament.
Flamingos Regain Momentum
The Flamingos began their Group B campaign with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Poland. Nevertheless, Coach Hakeem Busari’s side responded positively, defeating tournament debutants Puerto Rico 2-0.
Nigeria subsequently produced an impressive 3-1 victory over defending champions North Korea, securing their passage to the Round of 16.
Furthermore, the Nigerian girls maintained their momentum with a hard-fought victory over Mexico in the knockout stage. That result earned them a place in the quarter-finals and brought them closer to another appearance in the last four.
Consequently, the encounter against Venezuela offers the Flamingos another opportunity to improve on their performance at the previous edition.
Venezuela Arrive with Confidence
Venezuela, meanwhile, have returned to the competition after a ten-year absence. Although they opened their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to France, they recovered by securing three points against Zambia.
The South American side subsequently delivered one of the Round of 16 surprises, defeating Germany 1-0 to book their quarter-final place.
Moreover, Venezuela’s recent tournament history makes them a formidable opponent. They reached the semi-finals in their last two appearances and will now seek to extend that record with a third consecutive qualification.
Therefore, Nigeria must remain disciplined and organised throughout the encounter. The Flamingos will also need to convert their scoring opportunities while preventing Venezuela from exploiting any defensive weaknesses.
First World Cup Meeting
Nigeria and Venezuela have never faced each other at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Sunday’s encounter will consequently mark their first meeting in the competition. Without an earlier World Cup fixture to provide a direct comparison, both teams will have to rely largely on their performances in Morocco to assess the challenge ahead.
