GOVERNOR Umo Eno has strengthened his administration’s support for traditional institutions in Akwa Ibom State by approving the appointment of personal assistants to all 31 Paramount Rulers across the state’s local government areas.
The governor has also approved allowances for the appointees. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mkpisong Frank Archibong, disclosed the measures during the ministry’s ministerial briefing in Uyo over the weekend.
According to the commissioner, the appointments form part of the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare, dignity and effectiveness of traditional rulers.
Beyond the new appointments, the state government has provided official vehicles to all 31 Paramount Rulers. It also replaced seven unserviceable vehicles previously used by some of the monarchs.
Furthermore, the administration provided vehicles for local government chairmen and both serving and immediate past chairmen of the State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers.
To strengthen collective engagements, Governor Eno also donated a 32-seater Coaster bus to the traditional institution. The vehicle will support official meetings, workshops, conferences, inspection tours, social functions and recreational activities.
Archibong explained that the interventions go beyond recognising the traditional institution. Rather, they provide practical assistance and logistical support to help traditional rulers discharge their responsibilities.
Meanwhile, the government has continued to sponsor monarchs to attend training programmes, workshops, retreats and conferences. It has also supported their participation in peacebuilding initiatives, cultural activities and development events within and outside Akwa Ibom.
In another welfare measure, Governor Eno recently approved an increase in the allowances of traditional rulers to reflect prevailing economic realities.
The commissioner further listed regular security votes for Paramount Rulers, quarterly health assistance for monarchs and Christmas packages for all categories of traditional rulers among the administration’s other welfare provisions.
Taken together, these measures reflect the state government’s efforts to strengthen the traditional institution through improved welfare, mobility, healthcare and institutional support.
