Rising Insecurity Casts Shadow Over Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

Fresh attacks in Borno, Ondo and Kano have intensified concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security situation, with experts warning that persistent violence could shape the political climate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Violence Escalates Across Regions
NIGERIA’S security landscape has come under renewed strain following a series of deadly attacks, kidnappings and terrorist activities across different parts of the country.
In Borno State, troops of Operation Hadin Kai successfully repelled a Boko Haram assault on the Forward Operating Base at Mandaragirau. However, the operation came at a heavy cost, with five soldiers and three members of the Civilian Joint Task Force losing their lives during the confrontation.
Military authorities disclosed that the terrorists launched the attack under the cover of heavy rainfall and poor visibility. Despite the difficult conditions, troops mounted a fierce counteroffensive that prevented the insurgents from overrunning the facility.
Communities Under Attack
While security forces battled insurgents in the North-East, residents of Igbosi Community in Ondo State faced a different form of terror.
Armed kidnappers reportedly stormed the community in the early hours of Friday, firing sporadically and forcing residents to flee. During the attack, nine-year-old Victor Olaosebikan was abducted after his father escaped into nearby bushes.
The assailants also damaged several properties before fleeing the area.
Police authorities confirmed the incident and announced that a joint operation involving security agencies and local vigilantes had been launched to rescue the child and apprehend the perpetrators.
Kano Security Operatives Foil Kidnap Attempt
In Kano State, security operatives recorded a significant success after personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps thwarted a kidnap and cattle-rustling operation in Kiru Local Government Area.
According to officials, armed bandits attacked a shepherd, injured him and abducted two individuals before NSCDC operatives responded swiftly and engaged the criminals in a gun battle.
The victims were rescued unharmed, while the attackers reportedly escaped with injuries.
School Abductions Deepen Anxiety
The latest incidents come against the backdrop of growing public concern over the abduction of students and teachers in several states.
In May, gunmen kidnapped dozens of pupils and teachers from schools in Oyo and Borno states. Public outrage intensified after reports emerged that one of the abducted teachers, Michael Oyedokun, was allegedly killed by his captors.
The incidents triggered protests in several locations, with demonstrators demanding stronger government action to secure schools and communities.
Security and the Politics of 2027
Political observers and security analysts are increasingly linking the resurgence of violence to the approaching 2027 elections.
National Chairman of the Ondo State Eminent Persons Group, Banji Alabi, argued that insecurity in Nigeria has often intensified during politically sensitive periods.
According to him, violent actors and vested interests may exploit insecurity to weaken public confidence in government institutions and influence political outcomes.
He called for the establishment of a nationwide grassroots security framework involving traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups and retired security personnel.
Calls for Broader Collaboration
As concerns grow, stakeholders in the private security industry are advocating stronger collaboration between government agencies and private operators.
Ahead of the National Private Security Conference 2026, industry leaders stressed the need for improved intelligence-sharing, surveillance technology and public-private partnerships.
They argued that modern security threats require a coordinated response that goes beyond conventional law-enforcement structures.
Growing Pressure on Government
With terrorist attacks, kidnappings and banditry continuing across several regions, pressure is mounting on federal and state authorities to deliver lasting solutions.
Analysts warn that unless security conditions improve significantly, insecurity could become one of the defining issues shaping public discourse and voter sentiment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
