Promotion Race Begins As NWFL Confirms 2026 Championship Draw

THE Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has officially released the groupings for the 2026 NWFL Championship, setting the stage for an intense promotion tournament that will determine the two clubs joining the nation’s top-flight women’s league next season.
The championship, scheduled to take place in Calabar, will feature 16 ambitious clubs from across the country competing for just two coveted promotion slots to the 2026/27 NWFL Premiership.
Four Groups Set for Promotion Battle
The participating teams have been divided into four groups, each comprising four clubs expected to battle fiercely for qualification to the decisive stages of the competition.
Group A features Delta Babes, DreamStar Ladies FC, Rosaria Victrix FC and First Mahi Babes, with each side aiming to secure an early advantage in what promises to be a highly competitive group.
Group B brings together Pelican Stars, Gallant Queens, Ikukuoma Queens and Moje Queens in another evenly matched contest expected to produce exciting fixtures.
In Group C, Rangers Women FC will compete against Fortress Ladies FC, Wazbak International Sports Academy and Unification FC, while Group D consists of Imo Striker Queens, Kwara Ladies, Chosen Generation Angels FC and Ghetto Tigers.
Sixteen Clubs Eye Two Premiership Tickets
With only two places available in the 2026/27 NWFL Premiership, every match is expected to carry significant importance as clubs seek to secure promotion to Nigeria’s elite women’s football division.
The tournament offers participating teams an opportunity to showcase their quality while competing for a place among the country’s leading women’s clubs. Coaches and players will be under pressure to deliver consistent performances throughout the championship as the margin for error remains slim.
Calabar to Host High-Stakes Championship
Calabar will serve as the venue for the promotion tournament, with football enthusiasts expected to witness several closely contested encounters as teams pursue their Premiership ambitions.
The championship is expected to highlight the growing competitiveness of women’s football in Nigeria while providing another platform for emerging talents to demonstrate their abilities.
With the group stage now confirmed, preparations are expected to intensify as clubs fine-tune their squads ahead of one of the most important competitions on the domestic women’s football calendar.
