Political Parties Get Three-Day Reprieve As INEC Shifts 2027 Candidates’ Nomination Deadline

INEC Extends Deadline for 2027 Presidential, National Assembly Candidates’ Submission
Electoral Commission Grants Parties Additional Time After Technical Challenges
THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended by three days the deadline for political parties to submit the names and personal particulars of candidates contesting the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections, following appeals from stakeholders who encountered difficulties using the commission’s online nomination portal.
The electoral umpire announced that the submission window, originally scheduled to close on 11 July will now remain open until midnight on 14 July 2026, providing political parties with additional time to complete one of the most critical pre-election requirements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The extension comes as preparations for Nigeria’s next electoral cycle gather momentum under the revised election timetable introduced after amendments to the country’s electoral legal framework.
IPAC Appeal Influenced Commission’s Decision
INEC explained that the decision followed representations made by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), which notified the commission that several political parties were unable to complete the electronic submission of candidates’ names and personal particulars within the stipulated period.
In a statement signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the commission said the extension was intended to guarantee fairness and equal opportunity for all registered political parties.
According to INEC, the decision reflects its commitment to conducting an inclusive electoral process while remaining fully compliant with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the revised election timetable.
Candidate Nomination Remains Critical Stage of Election Process
Submission of candidates’ particulars represents one of the most significant milestones in Nigeria’s electoral calendar because it officially identifies individuals nominated by political parties to contest elective offices.
Under the revised electoral timetable, political parties have been uploading nomination forms and candidates’ personal information through INEC’s Candidate Nomination Portal since 27 June 2026.
Following the conclusion of the nomination exercise, the commission will proceed with the publication of candidates’ personal particulars, allowing members of the public, civil society organisations, political opponents and other stakeholders to examine the submitted information and raise objections where necessary in accordance with electoral laws.
INEC has fixed 14 August 2026 for the publication of the personal particulars of presidential and National Assembly candidates.
2027 Election Preparations Continue Under Revised Timetable
The extension does not alter the overall election calendar already announced by the commission.
According to the revised schedule:
- Presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on 16 January 2027.
- Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for 6 February 2027.
INEC noted that the revised timetable became necessary following legal adjustments affecting pre-election activities and election timelines.
The commission emphasised that while it remains responsive to genuine concerns raised by political stakeholders, compliance with the new deadline is mandatory.
INEC Warns Against Further Delays
While granting the additional three-day window, INEC made it clear that political parties should regard the extension as a final opportunity to complete their submissions.
The commission urged parties that are yet to conclude the nomination process to immediately utilise the extra time to upload all required documents and particulars before the portal closes.
Electoral observers note that timely completion of candidate nominations is essential to ensuring adequate verification, dispute resolution, publication of candidates and other statutory activities ahead of the commencement of campaigns and the eventual conduct of the 2027 general elections.
Extension Reflects Balance Between Flexibility & Electoral Certainty
Political analysts say the decision demonstrates INEC’s attempt to balance administrative flexibility with strict adherence to the electoral timetable.
While allowing political parties to overcome technical challenges, the commission also seeks to maintain confidence in the integrity, transparency and predictability of Nigeria’s electoral process by insisting that no further extension should be anticipated.
As political parties race to beat the revised deadline, attention is expected to shift to the publication of candidates’ particulars, internal party disputes arising from nominations and preparations for nationwide campaigns ahead of the 2027 polls.
