Peter Obi Donates ₦10 Million To Cross River Mission Hospital, Raises Alarm Over Maternal Deaths
By JULIET EKANEM
LABOUR Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million to the Catholic Maternity Hospital, Moniaya, in Cross River State. The donation was made during a visit to the hospital, which he described as an indispensable healthcare institution serving mothers, infants and vulnerable patients across the Ogoja area.
Obi said the facility has continued to function effectively despite limited resources and many years of operation. He noted that it remains one of the few hospitals providing dedicated maternity services in the area and continues to meet the healthcare needs of thousands of residents.
While addressing the hospital management, Obi lamented Nigeria’s persistent maternal and infant mortality challenges. He said the country continues to lose too many women and children to preventable causes. He maintained that stronger investments in healthcare infrastructure, personnel and medical equipment are necessary to reverse the trend.
He also pointed out that the hospital operates a Tuberculosis and Leprosy Centre in addition to its maternity services. According to him, the facility plays an important role in providing specialised medical care that is not readily available in many communities.
Obi described his ₦10 million contribution as a modest effort to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to continue delivering quality healthcare. He pledged continued support for institutions committed to improving the welfare of Nigerians.
He urged governments at all levels, corporate organisations, philanthropists and development partners to increase investment in healthcare and education, especially in mission-owned institutions that continue to bridge critical gaps in public service delivery.
According to Obi, supporting hospitals and schools is one of the most meaningful investments any nation can make because it directly improves human development, saves lives and strengthens the country’s long-term future.
