Delta Fixes September 14 for 2026/2027 School Resumption
THE Delta State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has released the approved provisional calendar for the 2026/2027 academic session, setting Monday 14 September 2026, as the official date for the resumption of teaching and learning.
The calendar covers public and private primary and post-primary schools across the state. It outlines resumption dates, teaching periods, examinations, mid-term breaks, holidays and other key academic activities for the three terms.
Staff, Boarders to Resume Earlier
While students will begin academic activities on 14 September, school principals, head teachers and teaching and non-teaching staff are expected to resume between Monday 7 September and Friday 11 September.
The early resumption period will allow schools to conduct meetings, process admissions and prepare for the new academic session.
Boarding students will return on Sunday 13 September.
First Term Runs for 65 School Days
The first term will run from 14 September to 18 December 2026, with 65 school days scheduled.
Teaching during the first half will run from 14 September to 23 October. Schools will then hold the mandatory mid-term Parents Teachers Association meeting from 26 to 30 October.
Academic activities will resume on 2 November and continue until 18 December.
First-term examinations will take place from 14 to 18 December. The final day will also feature the School Term Achievement Review and a mandatory School-Based Management Committee meeting.
The first-term holiday will begin after the term closes.
Second Term Opens in January
Boarders are expected back on 10 January 2027, while teaching and learning will resume on Monday 11 January.
The second term will have 49 school days. Its first half will run until 12 February, followed by a mid-term break from 15 to 19 February.
Teaching will resume on 22 February and continue through 25 March. Examinations and other end-of-term activities will follow during the final week of March.
Third Term Ends in July
The third term will begin with boarders returning on 18 April, while classroom activities will start on 19 April.
Teaching will continue until 28 May before the mid-term break from 31 May to 4 June.

The term will officially end on 23 July, with the third-term holiday commencing on 26 July.
The third term will also have 65 school days.
Key Examinations & Compliance Rules
The Cognitive/Placement Examination is scheduled for 22 May 2027. The Basic Education Certificate Examination will take place from 31 May to 4 June.
The Ministry said PTA meetings and STAR activities remain mandatory. Schools must schedule them within the periods provided in the calendar.
All public and private schools are expected to comply with the approved dates. Schools operating international curricula or seeking to close outside the approved dates must obtain approval from the Ministry.
National public holidays that fall within the academic session will also be observed according to Federal Government declarations.
The calendar gives parents, students and school administrators a clearer framework for planning fees, transportation, accommodation, examinations and holidays throughout the 2026/2027 session.
