Oborevwori Issues Strong Warning
DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has warned criminals and sponsors of political violence that the state will not provide room for crime and criminality.
He gave the warning on Wednesday when the newly deployed Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Samuel Erale, paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Asaba.
According to the governor, security remains a central pillar of his administration’s MORE Agenda.
He stressed that peace and safety are essential for economic growth, investment, development and the wellbeing of residents.
No Protection for Offenders
Oborevwori said his administration would maintain a firm approach to fighting crime regardless of an offender’s political affiliation or social status.
He insisted that nobody would receive protection from prosecution after committing a crime.
“If you are my brother, if you are my friend, if you commit, you go for it. Nobody is above the law,” he said.
Meanwhile, the governor urged the new police commissioner to strengthen intelligence-led policing across the state.
He specifically called for improved surveillance of communities, highways and waterways, particularly in riverine areas.
Stronger Community Security
Oborevwori also sought closer cooperation between the police and other security agencies.
He included traditional rulers, youth leaders, vigilante groups and other community stakeholders among those whose involvement could improve security.
In addition, he said community-based policing could strengthen public trust while helping security agencies obtain timely and useful intelligence.
The governor also raised concern over the proliferation of firearms.
He urged security agencies to intensify efforts to recover illegal weapons and arrest people found carrying unauthorised firearms, particularly rifles.
State Support for Security Agencies
Oborevwori assured the police and other security agencies of continued support through the Delta State Security Trust Fund.
He said the fund would continue to assist with operational vehicles and other logistics needed for effective policing.
Furthermore, he assured CP Erale that the state government would maintain its support for security operations, including during the electioneering period.
New Police Commissioner Promises Action
Earlier, CP Erale assured the governor and residents of his commitment to maintaining peace across Delta.
He pledged to operate with professionalism and discipline while ensuring that those values remained central to the command’s operations.
The commissioner also said he would review the existing security architecture and build on the achievements of his predecessors.
His objective, he added, was to strengthen security and make Delta safer for residents and businesses.
