Oborevwori Steps Up Electricity Drive, Targets 930MW Capacity

Delta Intensifies Push for Reliable Electricity
THE Delta State Government has intensified efforts to improve electricity supply through a strategic engagement with the Okpai Independent Power Plant (IPP) in Ndokwa East Local Government Area.
The initiative, directed by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, is part of a broader plan to maximise existing energy assets and strengthen power availability across the state.
Officials said the move reflects the administration’s commitment to practical solutions capable of supporting households, businesses and industrial expansion.
Okpai Plant Capacity in Focus
Leading the government delegation, Commissioner for Energy Engr. Michael Anoka disclosed that the Okpai facility currently generates about 480 megawatts of electricity.
He added that an additional 450 megawatts is expected from the plant’s second phase, which would raise total capacity to roughly 930 megawatts.
According to him, the state is exploring ways to harness part of this capacity to improve supply reliability for residents and commercial users.
Economic Growth Tied to Power Supply
Anoka said improved electricity remains critical to attracting investment, stimulating industrialisation and creating employment opportunities.
He noted that stable power would also improve the quality of daily life by reducing dependence on costly alternative energy sources.
The commissioner said Governor Oborevwori’s broader vision is to place Delta among the first Nigerian states with a fully electrified and competitive economy.
Investors Show Interest
The commissioner further revealed that the Ministry of Energy has received proposals from private investors interested in supporting Delta’s power expansion plans.
He said discussions with stakeholders are ongoing as the state seeks partnerships that can accelerate infrastructure delivery.
Officials at the plant, led by Engr. Enebeli Francis, received the delegation and confirmed the current output level as well as ongoing expansion work.
