THE victory of Master Great Chinedu Okediashi at the World Spelling Bee Championship in China has once again placed Delta State on the international academic map, reinforcing the state’s growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading centres of educational excellence.
In recognition of the feat, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori rewarded the student with ₦20 million during a reception at Government House, Asaba, where the championship trophy was formally presented to the state.
The governor described the achievement as more than an individual accomplishment, saying it reflected years of deliberate investment in education by successive administrations.

Addressing government officials, education stakeholders and members of the winning delegation, Oborevwori reiterated that education remains the most enduring investment any society can make.
He noted that while financial wealth could diminish over time, quality education equips individuals with lifelong knowledge and opportunities that remain valuable throughout their lives.
The governor said his administration would continue prioritising educational development through improved infrastructure, learning facilities and support for academic excellence.

He recalled that students from Delta formed part of Nigeria’s victorious team at the World Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, the previous year, arguing that the repeated successes demonstrate that the state’s educational strategy is producing consistent outcomes.
According to him, the emphasis is not merely on constructing school buildings but on creating an environment where students can compete successfully on the global stage.

Governor Oborevwori acknowledged the important role played by parents and educational institutions in nurturing academic excellence.
He praised Master Okediashi’s parents for their dedication despite their absence at the ceremony and commended Madonna International School for maintaining high educational standards.
The governor further announced that the school would also receive government support in recognition of its contribution to producing globally competitive students.

Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibuogwu, described the spelling bee victory as a landmark achievement for Africa, noting that the prestigious championship trophy had returned to the continent through Nigeria.
He attributed the success to years of preparation, government investment, financial assistance and continuous encouragement from Governor Oborevwori throughout the international competition.
Ashibuogwu maintained that Delta State’s educational reforms have significantly improved teaching quality, student performance and international competitiveness.
