Oborevwori Cracks Down On ‘Deve’, Warns Against Disrupting Delta Projects
Governor Reasserts Ban on Illegal Levies
DELTA State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has reaffirmed the state government’s ban on the illegal collection of levies popularly known as “Deve,” warning that offenders will face strict legal consequences.
The governor issued the directive during an inspection of ongoing work at Warri Stadium, stressing that his administration will not tolerate any activity capable of disrupting public or private sector projects.
Firm Warning Amid Prosecution of Offenders
Oborevwori’s warning follows the recent arraignment of two suspects accused of illegally collecting “Deve” from developers. The governor described such practices as unacceptable, declaring that any unauthorized levy imposed on contractors is “dead on arrival.”
He noted that the persistence of such illegal collections undermines development efforts and discourages both local and external investors from committing resources to projects in the state.
Backing Local Leadership and Stability
During the visit, the governor commended the Chairman of Warri South Local Government Council, Weyinmi Agbatayeniro, for promoting peace and supporting development initiatives in the area.
He emphasized that collaboration between state and local authorities has played a key role in ensuring a conducive environment for infrastructure projects to thrive.
Infrastructure Driving Jobs and Growth
Oborevwori highlighted the broader economic impact of ongoing infrastructure projects across Delta State, noting that they are generating employment and stimulating local economies.
According to him, artisans, suppliers, and small business owners are benefiting directly from government contracts, as projects continue to engage local labour and resources.
The governor dismissed claims that foreign workers dominate project execution, insisting that most jobs are being handled by Deltans, thereby strengthening local capacity and expertise.
Healthcare Incentives and Broader Development Agenda
In addition to infrastructure development, the governor revealed that his administration has introduced a special allowance for medical doctors as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
He explained that the initiative includes financial incentives designed to motivate health workers and enhance service quality in the state’s health sector.
