Nigeria Eyes Strong Start in Angola
NIGERIA’S senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, has received a strong vote of confidence from the National Sports Commission (NSC) ahead of the FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers in Angola, with officials expressing optimism that the team can secure vital victories in its quest for another World Cup appearance.
The qualification window, scheduled for 2 to 5 July 2026, presents another important opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen its position among Africa’s leading basketball nations and advance its campaign for a place at the next FIBA Basketball World Cup.
NSC Charges Team to Represent Nigeria with Pride
Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, urged the players to compete with determination, discipline and unity, describing D’Tigers as one of the continent’s most respected basketball teams.
Olopade said the commission remained confident in the team’s ability to rise to the occasion, noting that Nigerians expect the players to display resilience, teamwork and professionalism throughout the tournament.
He stressed that every match would be critical in the qualification race and encouraged the squad to maintain the fighting spirit that has defined Nigeria’s basketball success over the years.
Blend of Experience and Emerging Talent
Nigeria will head into the qualifiers with a balanced 12-man squad featuring established internationals and promising emerging stars expected to play significant roles during the campaign.
The squad includes Chimezie Metu, Caleb Agada, Stanley Okoye, Daniel Utomi, Uchenna (UC) Iroegbu, Ikenna (Ike) Iroegbu, Martins Igbanu, Paul Dibal, Wesley Iwundu, Christian Mekowulu, Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu and Michael Eric.
The team will be guided by Head Coach David Fizdale, whose experience is expected to prove valuable as Nigeria faces three challenging fixtures in quick succession.
Three Key Fixtures Await D’Tigers
Nigeria opens its qualification campaign against Tunisia on Thursday 2 July, before facing Guinea on Friday 3 July. The team will round off the qualification window with a decisive encounter against Rwanda on Sunday 5 July.
The National Sports Commission also appealed to Nigerians both at home and abroad to rally behind the national team, expressing confidence that strong public support would inspire D’Tigers as they pursue another successful World Cup qualification campaign.
