NNPC Records Breakthrough As OB3 Pipeline Crosses River Niger, Unlocking Gas Capacity

NNPC Achieves Key Engineering Breakthrough on OB3 Gas Pipeline
River Niger Crossing Successfully Completed
THE Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has recorded a major milestone with the successful completion of the River Niger crossing on the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) gas pipeline.
The development, executed by the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company, marks one of the most technically demanding phases of the project, which spans about 130 kilometres and is central to Nigeria’s gas infrastructure expansion.
According to official information, the crossing was achieved using advanced horizontal directional drilling technology approximately two kilometres beneath the River Niger riverbed.
Unlocking National Gas Capacity
With the completion of the crossing, the OB3 pipeline is now positioned to operate at its full design capacity of up to 2 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day.
This milestone is expected to strengthen gas supply reliability across Nigeria by linking major gas-producing regions in the east to consumption hubs in the west and northern corridors.
The pipeline is also integrated with other strategic infrastructure such as the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) project, improving nationwide energy connectivity.
Economic and Industrial Impact
NNPC says the development will significantly enhance domestic gas utilisation, supporting electricity generation, industrial growth, and wider economic development.
Industry observers note that improved gas transmission capacity could help reduce energy shortages and boost manufacturing output across key sectors.
The company described the achievement as part of its broader commitment to building a resilient national gas network that supports energy security.
