NFF Sacks Super Falcons Technical Crew After Historic WAFCON Setback
By FRED LONGJOHN OBEH
THE Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has ordered the Super Falcons’ technical crew to step down with immediate effect following the team’s disappointing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in Morocco.
The federation announced the decision on Monday through its official X account, @thenff. It said the Executive Committee directed members of the technical crew to leave their positions immediately.
Nigeria entered the tournament as defending champions and hoped to retain their continental crown. Instead, the campaign ended in a major setback, with the Super Falcons failing to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The outcome carries particular significance because Nigeria had appeared at every previous edition of the Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.
Consequently, the NFF has moved to overhaul the team’s technical structure as it seeks to halt what has become a worrying decline in results.
The federation must now find a new coaching team capable of rebuilding the squad and restoring its competitive edge. The task is particularly urgent because Nigeria’s next major challenge comes in the 2028 Olympic Games qualifying campaign.
The Olympic qualifiers are scheduled to begin in October, with the Super Falcons expected to face Comoros in their opening fixture.
Therefore, the NFF has little time to resolve the coaching situation. A prolonged transition could affect preparations and further complicate the team’s recovery.
The decision to remove the technical crew signals the beginning of a major restructuring of the Super Falcons. For a team that has long dominated African women’s football, the immediate challenge is not only to appoint new coaches but also to rebuild confidence and restore Nigeria’s place among the continent’s leading teams.
