NFF Moves To Deepen Women’s Football Ties With China

Nigeria and China Explore New Women’s Football Cooperation
Football Diplomacy Takes Centre Stage in Abuja
THE Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has stepped up efforts to strengthen football relations with the Chinese Football Association (CFA) following a high-level engagement with the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, in Abuja.
NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau described football as a powerful diplomatic bridge, stressing Nigeria’s interest in building structured cooperation with China, especially in women’s football where the Asian nation has established a strong global presence.
He noted that early discussions are already underway for Nigeria’s U-17 girls’ team to participate in a mini-tournament in China later in the year, a move seen as the beginning of a broader long-term partnership.
U-17 Girls’ Tournament Proposal on the Table
According to Gusau, the proposed youth tournament could serve as a foundation for deeper football exchanges between both countries, including friendly matches, training programmes and bilateral competitions hosted in Nigeria and China.
He explained that both federations are exploring ways to sustain regular engagement that would support youth development and improve competitive exposure for Nigerian female players.
China Welcomes Growing Sports Cooperation
Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai welcomed the initiative, noting that football remains a strong cultural connector between Nigeria and China.
He highlighted Nigeria’s historic achievements in global football, including Olympic success and youth tournament victories, while acknowledging China’s stronger performance in women’s football.
The envoy also expressed appreciation for Nigerian players and coaches contributing to the Chinese football league system, describing the relationship as mutually beneficial.
Symbolic Exchange of Friendship
The meeting ended with a symbolic exchange of gifts, as Gusau presented a Nigeria national team jersey to the ambassador, while Yu Dunhai gifted a commemorative Chinese souvenir plate to the NFF president.
