New Mbiaso Health Facility Signals Akwa Ibom’s Push For Quality Primary Care

A New Milestone in Community Healthcare
GOVERNOR Umo Bassey Eno has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to accessible and quality healthcare with the commissioning of a Model Primary Health Centre in Mbiaso, Ikot Ekpene.
Represented by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Umo Essien, the governor described the project as a major step toward strengthening primary healthcare delivery and improving human capital development across the state.
Expanding Access to Medical Services
The newly commissioned facility is expected to serve over 25 communities within Ikot Ekpene and Obot Akara Local Government Areas, significantly reducing the burden of long-distance travel for medical care.
According to officials, the centre is equipped to handle a wide range of services, including immunisation, maternal care, emergency response, and treatment of common illnesses such as malaria and pneumonia.
Qualified medical personnel, including doctors and nurses, have already been deployed, while an ambulance donated by a state lawmaker is set to boost emergency services.
Historical Roots, Modern Impact
The project also highlights the enduring role of the Methodist Church Nigeria in healthcare development. The church, which established the first health post in Ikot Ekpene in 1905, donated the land for the new facility.
Officials described the development as a continuation of a long-standing legacy of community service, blending historical contributions with modern healthcare needs.
Stakeholders Applaud Development Efforts
Community leaders, traditional rulers, and political stakeholders commended the governor for prioritising grassroots healthcare. They noted that the facility would ease access to medical services and improve overall public health outcomes.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem John, urged residents to utilise the facility and avoid unsafe alternatives such as unregulated traditional birth attendants.
Linking Governance to Development
Government representatives emphasised that the project aligns with broader development goals, including improved infrastructure, economic growth, and enhanced quality of life.
They reiterated that healthcare delivery remains a central pillar of governance, with ongoing investments aimed at ensuring sustainable and inclusive development.
