Morocco Knock Out Netherlands After Penalty Shootout Drama

Atlas Lions Show Character in Monterrey
MOROCCO produced one of the tournament’s most dramatic comebacks, defeating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties after a pulsating 1-1 draw to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
After dominating much of the encounter, the North Africans recovered from falling behind late in the second half before holding their nerve during a dramatic penalty shootout.
Morocco Create Better Chances
The Atlas Lions controlled possession for long periods and consistently tested the Dutch defence.
Achraf Hakimi and Neil El Aynaoui both came close to opening the scoring, but goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen delivered an inspired performance to keep the Netherlands level with a string of excellent saves.
Morocco continued to dictate proceedings after the interval, with Hakimi striking the crossbar and the Dutch defence forced into several crucial interventions.
Gakpo Delivers Emotional Moment
Against the flow of play, the Netherlands took the lead in the 72nd minute.
A long clearance from Verbruggen was expertly flicked on by substitute Wout Weghorst into the path of Crysencio Summerville, whose low cross found Cody Gakpo for a composed finish.
The goal sparked emotional celebrations after Gakpo recently revealed the personal tragedy suffered by his family before the tournament.
Late Equaliser Changes the Match
Morocco maintained relentless pressure even after conceding and found a deserved equaliser in stoppage time.
Chemsdine Taldi’s well-delivered cross was met by Issa Diop, whose powerful header beat Verbruggen and sent Moroccan supporters into celebration as the match headed into extra time.
Neither side managed to produce a decisive goal during the additional period despite several promising opportunities.
Saibari Seals Historic Victory
The penalty shootout proved just as dramatic as the match itself.
Both teams missed several spot-kicks before Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced a decisive save to deny Crysencio Summerville and hand the initiative to the Atlas Lions.
Ismail Saibari then stepped forward confidently and converted the winning penalty, sending Verbruggen the wrong way and confirming Morocco’s progression to the knockout stage.
The victory sets up a Round of 16 meeting with Canada, while Morocco’s resilience, organisation and composure under pressure further strengthen their reputation as one of the tournament’s most formidable teams.
