Mexico March Into Last 32 After Sinking South Korea
A second-half goal from Luis Romo secured a hard-fought victory over South Korea, making Mexico the first nation to book a place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Mexico Become First Team to Reach Knockout Stage
CO-HOSTS Mexico became the first country to secure qualification for the last 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging South Korea 1-0 in a tense Group A encounter in Guadalajara on Thursday night.
The victory preserved Mexico’s perfect start to the tournament and confirmed Javier Aguirre’s side as Group A winners with a game to spare, guaranteeing progression to the knockout rounds in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
While the result delighted Mexican supporters, it also underlined the team’s growing status as one of the early pace-setters of the expanded World Cup.
Romo Capitalises on Costly Defensive Error
After a first half that produced few clear-cut opportunities, the breakthrough arrived shortly after the restart.
Midfielder Luis Romo reacted quickest when South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu spilled the ball following a collision with teammate Lee Gi-hyuk. With the goalkeeper stranded, Romo calmly tapped into an empty net to hand Mexico the decisive advantage.
The goal transformed the atmosphere inside the stadium after supporters had voiced their frustration at the interval following a lacklustre opening 45 minutes.
South Korea Push for Equaliser
South Korea responded positively and came close on several occasions as they searched for a route back into the contest.
Captain Son Heung-min thought he had created a breakthrough when he cleverly chipped goalkeeper Raul Rangel, only for Edson Alvarez to clear the ball off the line. However, the effort was eventually ruled out for offside.
The Asian side’s best opportunity came late in the game when Cho Gue-sung’s close-range header was brilliantly saved by Rangel. The Mexican goalkeeper then reacted quickly to deny Yang Hyun-jun on the rebound, preserving his side’s slender lead.
Mexico Eye Deep World Cup Run
Mexico nearly doubled their advantage in the closing stages through veteran striker Raul Jimenez, whose effort from a tight angle was well saved by Kim.
Substitute Obed Vargas also tested the South Korean goalkeeper with a powerful strike as Mexico looked to finish strongly.
The result means Aguirre’s men will remain in Mexico City for both their Round of 32 fixture and a potential Round of 16 clash. Should England top their group and progress through the opening knockout round, a blockbuster meeting between the two nations could be on the cards.
South Korea Still in Contention
Despite the defeat, South Korea remain well positioned to advance after their opening victory against the Czech Republic.
Their qualification hopes will now depend on the outcome of their final group-stage encounter against South Africa in Monterrey, while Mexico conclude their group campaign against the Czech Republic in Mexico City.
For now, however, the spotlight belongs to Mexico, whose efficient display has made them the first nation to secure passage into the knockout rounds of the tournament they are helping to host.
