From Asaba To The World: Delta Scholars Earn Spot At Global Spelling Bee Finals

Delta Students Shine on Continental Stage
TWO students from Delta State have emerged as shining ambassadors of academic excellence after securing places at the prestigious Spelling Bee World Cup scheduled to hold in China in July 2026.
The young scholars, Chinedu Great Okediachi and Oghenetano Idoghor, earned the opportunity following an impressive run through state, national and continental spelling bee competitions, where they distinguished themselves among some of the brightest young minds in Africa.
Their remarkable achievements have drawn widespread commendation and further strengthened Delta State’s growing reputation for educational excellence.
Journey from Warri to Continental Recognition
The students’ success story began at the Delta State qualifiers held at Bumi School in Warri, where they outperformed hundreds of contestants through a combination of intelligence, preparation and determination.
Their outstanding performances secured qualification for the national finals in Port Harcourt, where they once again demonstrated exceptional academic ability.
Success at the national level earned them the honour of representing Nigeria at the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Competing against top contestants from across the continent, the duo delivered another memorable performance that placed Delta State firmly in the spotlight.
Bringing Honour to Nigeria and Delta
At the African championship, Chinedu Great Okediachi emerged as the first runner-up, ranking among the continent’s best young spellers.
His fellow contestant, Oghenetano Idoghor, also recorded an impressive showing, earning recognition as one of Africa’s leading young academic talents.
Their achievements not only brought distinction to their school, Madonna International School, Asaba, but also elevated Nigeria’s profile at the continental competition.
Education stakeholders have described the feat as evidence of the academic potential that exists within Nigerian schools when students receive the right support and encouragement.
Governor Steps In With Support
Recognising the significance of their accomplishment and the opportunity before them, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved financial support to facilitate their participation in the upcoming Spelling Bee World Cup in China.
The intervention followed efforts by the Commissioner for Works (Rural) and Public Information, Hon. Charles Aniagwu, who reportedly drew attention to the students’ achievements and the need to support their global ambition.
The governor’s approval ensures that financial limitations will not hinder the students’ preparations or participation in the international competition.
Commitment to Human Capital Development
Observers have described the governor’s decision as a reflection of his administration’s commitment to youth development, education and human capital investment.
Many stakeholders noted that academic accomplishments deserve the same level of support often accorded to achievements in sports and entertainment.
The support, they argued, sends a powerful message to students across the state that hard work, discipline and excellence will be recognised and rewarded.
Eyes on China
As preparations begin for the global competition, excitement continues to grow among educators, parents and students across Delta State.
For Chinedu and Oghenetano, the journey from local qualifiers in Warri to the world stage in China represents more than personal success; it is a symbol of what can be achieved when talent meets opportunity.
Their story has become a source of inspiration for young Nigerians aspiring to compete at the highest levels of academic excellence.
As they prepare to represent Nigeria and Africa on the global stage, expectations are high that the two young scholars will once again make their state and country proud.
