Electricity Returns To Delta Communities, But Labour Dispute Continues In Edo

By GEORGETTE CHIDI
ELECTRICITY has been restored across major parts of Delta State after the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) suspended its industrial action in the state.
The restoration, completed by Wednesday evening, 21 October 2026, ended the blackout that had disrupted homes, businesses and essential services for several days.
BEDC Electricity Plc confirmed the suspension of the union’s picketing action in Delta, Ondo and Ekiti following consultations with union leaders. In response, technical teams from BEDC and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) moved to reconnect affected distribution feeders.
By Wednesday evening, the restoration had covered Asaba, Warri, Effurun, Ughelli and surrounding communities. As a result, residents and business operators could resume using grid electricity after depending on costly diesel generators during the outage.
The return of power brought relief to hoteliers, healthcare operators, small businesses and households that had struggled with the disruption. In particular, businesses that rely on electricity to provide services can now resume normal operations where supply has been restored.
Nevertheless, the dispute has not ended across all the company’s franchise states. BEDC said the strike remained in force in Edo State, where discussions were continuing to resolve outstanding labour issues.
The company added that it was prioritising safe and progressive power restoration in Delta, Ondo and Ekiti. It also assured customers that recovery efforts would continue as operations stabilised.
For now, electricity consumers in the three states can welcome the return of supply. However, a lasting resolution will depend on the outcome of negotiations between BEDC management and the union, particularly in Edo State, where the industrial action persists.
