DSS Moves Nnamdi Kanu To Sokoto Prison After Terrorism Conviction
By DIANA CHUKWUKA
THE Department of State Services has transferred IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from its Abuja detention facility to the Nigerian Custodial Centre in Sokoto, following his conviction for terrorism.
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, had ruled on Thursday that the DSS could move Kanu to any correctional centre in the country. The judgment found him guilty on seven terrorism-related charges and imposed a life sentence, affirming the DSS claim that he deployed violent methods in his secessionist campaign across parts of the South-East, South-South, Benue, and Kogi.
Kanu’s relocation was confirmed on Friday by his legal consultant, Aloy Ejimakor, who said the move places him far from his legal team and family. A security source also confirmed the transfer to Daily Trust.
During Thursday’s proceedings, prosecution counsel Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) urged the court to apply the maximum penalty allowed for some charges, arguing that the law gives no room for judicial discretion. He also asked for the shutdown of Kanu’s digital accounts and requested that he be kept in a highly secure facility to prevent interference or possible threats from supporters or adversaries while serving his sentence.
