Warri to Host Flag-Off Ceremony

THE Delta State Government will commence the statewide distribution of life jackets donated by the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy on Monday 20 July 2026, as part of a coordinated effort to improve safety on the state’s inland waterways.

The exercise will officially begin in Warri before extending to riverine communities across the state’s three senatorial districts.

According to the government, the initiative is designed to strengthen water transportation safety and encourage greater compliance with established navigation standards.

Boat Operators, Passengers to Benefit

The distribution programme will target key stakeholders in the maritime transport sector, including boat operators, ferry owners, transport unions and regular passengers who depend on waterways for daily commuting.

Beneficiaries also include members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) and registered associations of commercial boat and ferry operators across Delta State.

Government officials said the intervention is expected to improve the availability of essential safety equipment for water transport users.

Part of Broader Safety Campaign

The initiative forms part of the Directorate of Transport’s ongoing campaign to improve waterway safety through public awareness, regulatory compliance and the promotion of safe navigation practices.

Authorities said the campaign aims to reduce boat mishaps and prevent avoidable deaths by encouraging consistent use of life jackets and adherence to maritime safety regulations.

Government Seeks Stakeholder Cooperation

The state government has appealed to transport unions, operators and other stakeholders to actively participate in the distribution exercise and support efforts to improve safety on Delta’s waterways.

Officials expressed optimism that the initiative would contribute significantly to protecting lives, strengthening public confidence in water transportation and promoting safer inland navigation across the state.
