Delta Government Steps Up Road & Waterway Safety Campaign, Targets Traffic Offences

By GEORGETTE CHIDI
THE Delta State Government has intensified its public sensitisation campaign to promote compliance with traffic regulations and improve safety across the state’s roads and waterways.
Through the Directorate of Transport, the government is urging motorists, commercial drivers, transport operators and boat handlers to observe established safety guidelines.
In a public announcement, Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Onoriode Agofure, warned road users against overloading, driving against traffic, dangerous overtaking and operating vehicles with expired or worn-out tyres.
He also cautioned vehicle owners against using unroadworthy vehicles. According to the government, excessive exhaust emissions contribute to environmental pollution and pose serious public health risks.
Meanwhile, the administration has renewed its warning to commercial boat operators and passengers travelling through the state’s riverine communities. It stressed that everyone must wear approved life jackets while travelling by water to reduce the risk of drowning and boat accidents.
Agofure emphasised that compliance with transport regulations remains essential to protecting lives and property. He added that the state government would continue to pursue an efficient, affordable and safe transportation system across all 25 local government areas.
The campaign forms part of the administration’s broader commitment to improving public safety and supporting socio-economic development through safer transportation networks.
