CP Erale Assumes Duty as 25th Delta Commissioner of Police

THE Delta State Police Command has formally welcomed CP Samuel Etaifo Erale, psc, mnips, as its new Commissioner of Police, marking a new phase in the state’s security leadership.

Erale assumed duty on 31 August 2026, succeeding CP Yemi John Oyeniyi. His appointment makes him the 25th Commissioner of Police to lead the Delta Command.

The new police chief arrives with more than three decades of experience spanning tactical operations, criminal investigation, administration, personnel management and community safety.

A Career Built Across Multiple Commands

A native of Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, Erale was born in Lagos on 2 March 1968. He studied Political Science at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, graduating in 1992.

He joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1994 as a member of Course 18 Cadet Assistant Superintendents of Police.

Since then, he has served in Kogi, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Rivers and Osun states. He has also worked at Zone 7 Headquarters and the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

His assignments have covered both frontline policing and institutional administration. They include service as a Personal Assistant to senior police officers, Squadron Commander in the Police Mobile Force and officer at the Force Criminal Investigation Department’s Special Investigation Unit.

Extensive Tactical Experience

Erale brings substantial experience from the Police Mobile Force, where he spent 14 years, including nine years as a Squadron Commander.

That background places him among police commanders with significant exposure to tactical deployment and complex security operations.

His recent assignments included Deputy Commissioner of Police, Administration, in Rivers State from 2022 to 2026. He later served as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Community Safety and Crime Prevention, at Force Headquarters, Abuja.

He also handled a major national security responsibility as Commissioner of Police in charge of the recently concluded Osun State governorship election.

The Police Command described the Osun election as one of the peaceful and successful off-cycle elections in recent times.

International & Professional Exposure

Beyond domestic policing, Erale participated in a United Nations peace-support mission in Kosovo in 2000.

His professional training includes an Advanced Detective Course, a Small Arms and Explosives Course at the International Law Enforcement Academy in Gaborone, Botswana, and tactical leadership training at the Police Staff College, Jos.

He also attended a Peace Support Course at the National Defence College in 2015 and a Strategic and Senior Command Course in 2021.

Erale belongs to the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Institute of Police Studies.

Security Expectations in Delta

His arrival comes at a time when Delta requires sustained attention to crime prevention, intelligence gathering, community policing and rapid operational response.

The breadth of his previous assignments could prove useful as the Command confronts complex security challenges across the state.

The Police Command described him as a tested operational commander whose career reflects professionalism, discipline and commitment to duty.

His immediate challenge, however, will be to translate that experience into measurable improvements in public safety.

For communities across Delta, expectations will centre on effective crime prevention, stronger police-community relations and a policing system capable of responding quickly to emerging threats.

Erale is married with children. Outside policing, he enjoys badminton and brisk walking.
