Delta EXCO Approves Permanent 13th-Month Salary For Workers, Clears Recruitment Of Teachers Approves Equipment For Technical Colleges, New Monarch For Oyede Kingdom
THE Delta State Executive Council (EXCO) has approved the institutionalisation of the 13th-month salary for civil servants, the recruitment of additional teachers for public secondary schools and the provision of modern equipment for technical colleges as part of measures to improve workers’ welfare and strengthen education in the state.
The decisions were reached at the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said EXCO approved a memo presented by Governor Oborevwori to make the payment of the 13th-month salary a permanent statutory benefit for workers in the state’s civil service.
Aniagwu, who addressed the media alongside the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, and the Commissioner for Transport, Onoriode Agofure, disclosed that the approval would pave the way for an Executive Bill to be transmitted to the Delta State House of Assembly for legislative consideration.
According to him, the proposed legislation is intended to ensure that the payment of the 13th-month salary is no longer dependent on the discretion of any administration but becomes a legally guaranteed entitlement for civil servants.
He explained that once the bill is passed into law, future administrations would be bound to continue the payment, thereby providing greater financial security and certainty for workers.
The commissioner also revealed that the Executive Council expressed concern over the shortage of teachers in public secondary schools, particularly in science-related subjects, and resolved to address the manpower deficit.
He said EXCO directed the Ministry of Secondary Education to immediately prepare a comprehensive memo indicating the number of teachers required for recruitment, adding that the council had, in principle, approved the employment of additional teachers to improve teaching and learning across the state’s public secondary schools.
Aniagwu further disclosed that the council approved the procurement and installation of equipment for the Technical College, Oghareki, in Ethiope West Local Government Area, while also approving plans to equip the Technical College, Irri, upon the completion of ongoing infrastructure.
He said the approvals demonstrate the Oborevwori administration’s commitment to revitalising technical and vocational education by providing students with practical skills required for employment, innovation and entrepreneurship.
According to him, the Executive Council also considered and approved several matters relating to the health and transport sectors, including the creation of new transport routes aimed at improving mobility across the state.
Aniagwu further announced that EXCO approved the appointment of HRM Goodnews Goodman Agbi, PhD, Athuaro I, as the Ovie of Oyede Kingdom in Isoko North Local Government Area.
He noted that the decisions reached during the meeting reflect the administration’s continued focus on enhancing workers’ welfare, expanding access to quality education, strengthening healthcare delivery, improving transportation and promoting effective governance across Delta State.
