Dakar 2026: Nigeria Steps Up Youth Olympic Push With 30 Days To Go

By AUGUSTUS ISICHEI
WITH just 30 days to the opening of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, Nigeria is stepping up preparations for the global youth sports showcase.
The Games will run from 31st October to 13th November, bringing together about 2,700 athletes aged up to 17 from around the world. They will compete across 25 sports, while 10 additional engagement sports will promote wider participation among young people.
For Nigeria, however, the competition represents more than a medal opportunity. It also provides a platform to expose young athletes to elite international competition and strengthen the pathway for discovering future stars.
National Sports Commission Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, said the Games would help nurture the next generation of Nigerian athletes.
According to him, the Commission is focused on supporting emerging talents and building a stronger development system that can feed future Olympic and international teams.
Meanwhile, Dakar 2026 will take place across three host zones — Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. The programme will combine sporting competition with youth development, education, cultural exchange and Olympic values.
As the countdown enters its final month, attention is therefore shifting to Nigeria’s young representatives and the experience they will gain on the international stage.
Beyond the competition itself, Dakar 2026 carries historic significance. It will become the first Olympic sporting event ever staged on African soil, giving the Games a wider continental dimension.
