Church Urges Families To Recognise Sacrifices Of Fathers

Church Reflects on Modern Challenges Facing Fathers
AS Christians marked Father’s Day 2026, the Catholic Church used the occasion to spotlight the often-overlooked emotional and financial pressures confronting fathers in contemporary society.
Delivering a special sermon at Saint Augustine’s Catholic Church in Ikeja, Executive Secretary of Caritas Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Peter Babajida-Audu, urged fathers not to lose hope despite mounting responsibilities and economic challenges.
The cleric spoke on the theme “Fathers Also Cry, but God Has Not Forgotten Them,” emphasizing that fathers deserve both recognition and support for the roles they play within their families.
Hidden Responsibilities and Untold Sacrifices
According to the priest, many fathers face enormous expectations from their families, workplaces and communities while striving to provide stability and security.
He observed that countless men spend sleepless nights worrying about school fees, rent, healthcare expenses and the future of their children.
While society often portrays fathers as symbols of strength, he argued that many quietly endure anxiety, exhaustion and emotional strain.
“Behind many smiles are untold sacrifices, and behind many successes are stories of perseverance that often go unnoticed,” he said.
The cleric added that recognising these realities is essential to building stronger family relationships and healthier communities.
Biblical Lessons on Endurance
Referencing biblical teachings, Rev. Fr. Babajida-Audu said the experiences of Prophet Jeremiah provide valuable lessons about perseverance during difficult times.
He noted that despite facing opposition and hardship, Jeremiah remained faithful to his mission, a quality that many fathers continue to demonstrate in their daily lives.
The priest explained that Christ’s repeated encouragement to “fear not” was a reminder that challenges are part of life but should not diminish faith and hope.
He urged fathers to draw strength from their spiritual convictions and remain committed to their responsibilities despite the pressures they encounter.
Families Have a Role to Play
The cleric emphasized that supporting fathers should be a collective responsibility shared by spouses, children and society at large.
He encouraged family members to express gratitude for the sacrifices fathers make and to offer emotional support whenever possible.
According to him, appreciation and understanding can have a profound impact on fathers who often carry family burdens without complaint.
He also called for greater awareness of men’s mental and emotional wellbeing, noting that many fathers struggle silently because of cultural expectations surrounding masculinity.
Building Stronger Homes and Communities
Rev. Fr. Babajida-Audu concluded by stressing that strong families remain the foundation of stable communities and national development.
He urged fathers to continue serving as role models through integrity, dedication and faith while encouraging families to value their contributions more intentionally.
As Father’s Day celebrations unfolded nationwide, the message resonated as a reminder that behind the responsibilities of fatherhood lies a human story of sacrifice, resilience and unwavering commitment to family and society.
