Chadian Troops Suffer Heavy Losses As Militants Strike Military Base

Escalating Insurgency in Lake Chad Region
Deadly Night Assault on Military Base
AT least 23 soldiers of the Chadian Armed Forces have been killed and 26 others injured following a coordinated attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on a military outpost in the volatile Lake Chad region.
The assault, which occurred late Monday night, targeted a base on Barka Tolorom island—an area long regarded as a strategic but vulnerable location within the insurgency-prone basin. Military authorities confirmed that the attack triggered an intense firefight between troops and the insurgents.
Troops Repel Attack Amid Heavy Casualties
Despite the high casualty toll, the Chadian military said its forces ultimately repelled the attackers after a fierce exchange. While officials noted that the insurgents also suffered “significant losses,” no official figures were released regarding militant casualties.
The confrontation highlights the persistent operational strength of Boko Haram and its ability to mount coordinated assaults on fortified positions, even in heavily militarised zones.
Government Condemns ‘Cowardly’ Attack
President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a “cowardly” attack against national forces. He extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and praised the bravery of troops who defended the base.
The president reaffirmed Chad’s commitment to intensifying military operations against insurgent groups operating across the Lake Chad basin, vowing that the country would continue its fight “with renewed determination.”
Lake Chad Remains a Conflict Flashpoint
The Lake Chad region—bordering Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon—has remained a major hotspot for Boko Haram and its splinter factions. The porous borders and difficult terrain have enabled insurgents to carry out cross-border attacks with relative ease.
Security analysts warn that the latest assault mirrors a troubling pattern of increasing pressure on Chadian forces, recalling a similar deadly attack in October 2024 that left about 40 soldiers dead.
Ongoing Military Operations
Military authorities confirmed that operations are ongoing to secure the area and prevent further incursions. Reinforcements and surveillance efforts have reportedly been intensified to track fleeing insurgents and stabilise the region.
The latest attack underscores the enduring threat posed by extremist groups in the Lake Chad basin and the continued challenges facing regional security forces.
