Ashe Blazes To History As Oborevwori Salutes Team Delta’s Dominance

Team Delta Celebrates Strong Outing at Commonwealth Games Trials
DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has congratulated Team Delta athletes for delivering impressive performances at the Commonwealth Games National Trials in Lagos, where several athletes secured national titles and podium finishes.
The governor singled out sprint sensation Favour Ashe for special commendation after the Delta-born athlete produced a historic run to become Nigeria’s fastest man, further cementing his reputation as one of the country’s leading sprint talents.
Oborevwori described the achievements recorded by Team Delta as proof that sustained investment in sports development continues to yield positive results for the state and the nation.
Favour Ashe Sets New Standard in Nigerian Sprinting
The highlight of the championships came in the men’s 100 metres, where Ashe stormed to victory in a remarkable personal best time of 9.93 seconds.
The performance not only secured the national title but also established a new benchmark as the fastest time ever recorded by a Nigerian athlete to win the national championship and the fastest 100m performance on Nigerian soil.
Having confidently predicted success before the competition, Ashe demonstrated his readiness by first running 9.98 seconds in the semi-finals before lowering the mark further in the final.
The achievement continued his impressive tradition of breaking the 10-second barrier whenever he wins a national title. In 2022, he captured his first championship crown in Benin City with a time of 9.99 seconds.
Delta Athletes Deliver Across Multiple Events
Beyond Ashe’s heroics, Team Delta athletes excelled in several disciplines.
Veteran quarter-miler Patience Okon-George reaffirmed her status among Nigeria’s elite runners by clinching the women’s 400 metres title in 51.87 seconds. The victory marked her fifth national championship and her first since 2021.
Delta athletes also featured prominently in the event, with Kudoro Taiwo finishing as runner-up.
In the men’s 400 metres, Johnson Tyler, who recently switched sporting allegiance from the United States to Nigeria, emerged champion after clocking 45.75 seconds. Achakpoekiri Victory secured silver with 45.91 seconds, while Emmanuel Ojeli claimed bronze in 45.94 seconds.
Consistency in the Field Events
Team Delta’s success extended to the field events as Divine Oladipo successfully defended her women’s shot put title.
Her winning throw of 16.90 metres preserved her unbeaten record at the Nigerian Championships and reinforced her position as one of the country’s leading throwers.
The consistent performances across track and field events highlighted Team Delta’s depth and strength ahead of future national and international competitions.
Governor Reaffirms Commitment to Sports Development
Governor Oborevwori said the accomplishments of the athletes justified the state’s long-standing commitment to sports excellence.
According to him, Delta State will continue to provide support, exposure and opportunities for athletes to compete at the highest levels.
He expressed confidence that Team Delta would continue producing champions capable of bringing honour to both the state and Nigeria on the continental and global stage.
The governor noted that the latest performances serve as encouragement for young athletes across the state, demonstrating that dedication, preparation and institutional support can produce world-class results.
