Akwa Ibom Upgrades Ibom Hotel With CNG Power System In Major Energy Reform Push

High-Tech Energy Shift at Ibom Hotel Signals Infrastructure Overhaul
Strategic intervention at flagship hospitality asset
THE Akwa Ibom State Government has intensified its overhaul of the Ibom Hotel & Golf Resort in Uyo with the installation of three high-capacity Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) generators, marking a significant shift in the facility’s energy infrastructure.
The intervention forms part of a broader modernization programme aimed at repositioning the state-owned hospitality asset for improved efficiency and international competitiveness.
According to the State Delivery Adviser on Tourism and Managing Director of the hotel, Sir Charles Udoh, the development addresses long-standing operational challenges, particularly unreliable electricity supply and high dependence on diesel-powered generators.
4500KVA capacity designed to stabilise power supply
Udoh disclosed that the newly installed units consist of three 1500KVA noise-proof CNG generators housed in 40-foot containers, delivering a combined capacity of 4500KVA.
He explained that the system is designed to provide uninterrupted power for hotel operations, significantly reducing reliance on the national grid and eliminating frequent service disruptions caused by power instability.
The facility also includes dedicated gas storage systems and supporting infrastructure intended to ensure continuous fuel supply and operational reliability.
Shift from diesel to cleaner energy model
Officials say the transition from diesel to CNG represents both an economic and environmental upgrade, reducing operational costs while aligning with cleaner energy practices.
The hotel had previously relied on aging diesel generators, which contributed to high maintenance costs and inconsistent power delivery.
The adoption of CNG technology is expected to enhance sustainability while improving service efficiency across the resort.
Broader renovation includes rooms, cooling systems, and lighting
Beyond energy reforms, the state government has also supplied industrial chillers to improve cooling systems within the facility.
In addition, renovation work is ongoing across 47 rooms—comprising 40 hotel rooms and seven external apartments—as part of a broader refurbishment programme.
Authorities also confirmed the installation of over 1,500 solar-powered streetlights across the hotel and golf course precinct, aimed at improving security, aesthetics, and enabling night-time golf activities.
Tourism repositioning strategy under review
Officials disclosed that parts of the renovation process were temporarily adjusted to accommodate design input from international hotel management consultants engaged by the state government.
The broader objective, according to the tourism office, is to reposition the Ibom Hotel & Golf Resort as a competitive tourism and investment destination within Nigeria and beyond.
