Akwa Ibom Begins Public Transport Transformation with Arrival of CNG Bus Fleet
Governor Receives First Phase of 50-Bus Fleet
AKWA Ibom State has taken another step toward overhauling its public transportation system with the arrival of the first batch of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses ordered by the state government.
Governor Umo Eno received and inspected the newly delivered buses, describing the development as a significant milestone in his administration’s efforts to provide residents with safer, more affordable and efficient transportation services.
The governor disclosed that the 20 buses delivered represent the first phase of a planned fleet of 50 CNG-powered vehicles that will operate across the state’s 31 local government areas.
State Targets Safer, Cleaner and More Efficient Mobility
Governor Eno said the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to simplify transportation while improving accessibility for commuters throughout Akwa Ibom.
He noted that the introduction of CNG buses would complement the state’s expanding road infrastructure, providing residents with a modern transit system capable of meeting growing transportation needs.
According to him, the project reflects the administration’s determination to build an efficient transport network that supports economic activities while offering greater comfort and convenience to passengers.
Digital Ticketing, Tracking Systems Planned
Beyond the arrival of the buses, the governor disclosed that work would now focus on completing supporting infrastructure needed for seamless operations.
He said government would accelerate the construction of bus terminals, install vehicle tracking systems and introduce a modern electronic ticketing platform aimed at improving operational efficiency, passenger safety and accountability.
The governor commended the Ministry of Transport, the project contractor, members of the military and other stakeholders for ensuring the successful delivery of the buses.
Project Signals Infrastructure Delivery Phase
Governor Eno described the transport initiative as part of what he called a new phase in the state’s infrastructure development programme, noting that several government projects are gradually reaching implementation and delivery stages.
He urged residents to remain patient and continue supporting government programmes, stressing that sustainable development requires careful planning, consistency and long-term commitment.
According to him, the arrival of the buses demonstrates that investments made by the administration are beginning to produce tangible results that will positively affect the lives of citizens.
Transport Commissioner Commends Governor’s Vision
Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Anthony Luke, praised the governor for prioritising reforms in the transportation sector.
He said the acquisition of the CNG buses reflects deliberate efforts to improve public transportation while enhancing the welfare of residents through accessible and environmentally friendlier mobility solutions.
The event was attended by several senior government officials, including Secretary to the State Government Prince Enobong Uwah, Executive Assistant and Chief Delivery Advisory to the Governor Aniefiok Johnson, AKICORP Managing Director Imo-Abasi Jacob, Senior Special Assistant on Entrepreneurial Development Ime Uwah, alongside other members of the state government.
