Akwa Ibom Moves To Launch CNG Bus Operations, Extends Tricycle Registration

THE Akwa Ibom State Government is preparing to launch its CNG bus service in November as construction continues on a dedicated terminal in Uyo.
Governor Umo Eno inspected the terminal during a tour of government projects.
The facility is being built to accommodate the state’s new CNG buses and provide the infrastructure needed to keep them operational.
Akwa Ibom has already acquired 50 CNG buses.
However, Eno said the government was building beyond the buses themselves.
The project includes a workshop, training centre and other facilities for the transport system.
The governor said the contractors remained on course to deliver the terminal in November.
The timing will place the launch ahead of the Christmas Unplugged celebrations scheduled to begin on 1st December 2026.
At the same time, the state is tightening its regulation of commercial transportation.
The government has extended the deadline for registering tricycles and buses to September 30.
The registration requires operators to obtain identification numbers and QR codes for their vehicles.
After the deadline, unregistered vehicles will not be permitted to operate on Akwa Ibom roads.
Eno said the government granted the extension after transport operators appealed for more time.
He also stressed the security importance of the registration exercise.
With more people expected to travel during the festive period, the governor said authorities need reliable information about commercial drivers and vehicles operating across the state.
“If anything went wrong, we know how to track them,” he said.
The governor’s inspection tour also covered the Victor Attah International Airport Hospital, Aviation Staff Quarters and Dakkada Luxury Estate.
He said work on the projects was progressing satisfactorily.
For Eno, regular project inspections remain an important part of government oversight.
He said visiting project sites allows him to question contractors and officials, obtain clarifications and verify whether progress matches information contained in official reports.
