AI-Driven Malware ‘DeepLoad’ Threatens Nigerian Banks, Agencies — NITDA
Agency says dangerous malware steals passwords, banking details and sensitive documents while evading traditional antivirus systems.
THE National Information Technology Development Agency has issued a warning over a dangerous artificial intelligence-powered malware identified as “DeepLoad,” which is reportedly targeting government institutions, financial organisations, businesses and individual users across Nigeria.
In a security advisory released through its verified X account, the agency disclosed that the malware is capable of silently infiltrating devices, harvesting sensitive information and bypassing conventional antivirus protections through the use of AI-driven techniques.
According to NITDA, once activated on a device, DeepLoad installs itself discreetly and begins extracting stored user credentials, passwords and confidential browser data without immediate detection.
Threat to Banking and Public Institutions
The agency warned that the malware poses significant risks to banks, mobile money platforms and payment systems by enabling unauthorised access to financial accounts and digital services.
NITDA stated that DeepLoad can also compromise sensitive personal information and important documents, exposing victims to identity theft, fraud and impersonation attacks.
Officials explained that cybercriminals could exploit stolen data for financial gain, disruption of organisational workflows and infiltration of classified government networks.
The agency added that the malware represents a broader threat to national security because of its potential to compromise sensitive public-sector infrastructure and governance systems.
Institutions and Citizens at Risk
According to the advisory, the malware specifically targets public and private institutions, financial organisations, critical infrastructure operators and ordinary citizens using online banking or email platforms.
NITDA urged Nigerians to exercise caution while browsing the internet and interacting with unfamiliar websites or digital prompts.
The agency specifically warned users against copying and pasting links or commands from untrusted online sources into browsers or devices, stressing that legitimate platforms rarely request such actions.
Cybersecurity experts have increasingly warned about the growing sophistication of AI-assisted cyber threats, with malicious actors deploying advanced technologies capable of adapting to security systems and avoiding detection.
NITDA reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening digital security awareness and protecting Nigeria’s cyberspace against evolving cyber threats.
