Business Mogul Defeats Rival in Statewide Primary
RENOWNED businessman and long-time political figure, Chief Great Ogboru, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Delta State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ogboru secured a sweeping victory during the party’s governorship primaries conducted across the 25 local government areas of the state, polling 38,151 votes to defeat his only challenger, Dr. Emmanuel Unuafe, who garnered 1,182 votes.
The exercise, monitored by party officials and delegates, also covered nominations for State Assembly, House of Representatives and Senate positions.
ADC Commends Peaceful Conduct of Primaries
Announcing the results, Chairman of the ADC Primary Election Committee, Prof. Sambo Williams, described the exercise as peaceful, orderly and reflective of the party’s commitment to internal democracy.
Williams said all aspirants were given equal opportunities in line with the ADC constitution and electoral guidelines, stressing that the process demonstrated transparency and fairness.
According to him, the successful completion of the primaries signalled the readiness of the party to compete strongly in the 2027 elections in Delta State.
“The conduct of this exercise shows that the ADC remains united and committed to democratic principles,” he stated.
Call for Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections
The election committee chairman urged aspirants, delegates and party supporters to work together in the interest of the party as preparations intensify for the governorship contest.
He advised party members to set aside personal ambitions and focus on strengthening the ADC’s structure across the state ahead of the polls.
Williams also commended security agencies, electoral officials and party faithful for contributing to the peaceful conduct of the exercise.
Political observers note that the outcome further consolidates Ogboru’s influence within Delta politics, where he has remained a prominent opposition figure for years.
Supporters Express Confidence in Ogboru
Following the announcement of the results, supporters of the governorship candidate erupted in celebration at the party secretariat, expressing optimism that Ogboru’s emergence would strengthen the ADC’s chances in the state.
Many supporters described him as an experienced political figure with strong grassroots appeal capable of mounting a serious challenge in the 2027 governorship race.
Ogboru, popularly known in political circles as “The People’s General,” has contested several governorship elections in Delta State under different political platforms and remains one of the state’s most recognisable opposition politicians.
ADC Positions Itself for Competitive Contest
The primaries come amid growing political realignments in Delta State as opposition parties intensify efforts to challenge the dominance of the ruling political establishment.
Analysts believe the ADC is seeking to position itself as a viable alternative ahead of the 2027 elections by presenting familiar political figures with established support bases.
The peaceful conduct of the primaries is also expected to boost the party’s image as it begins wider mobilisation across the state.
With campaigns expected to gather momentum in the coming months, political attention is likely to shift toward coalition-building, party unity and voter engagement as the contest for Government House gradually takes shape.
