Political Scientists Outline Steps For Tinubu To Ease US Pressure On Nigeria
By FIDELUS ZWANSON
THE president of the Nigeria Political Scientists Association (NPSA), Prof. Hassan Saliu, has advised President Bola Tinubu on measures to mitigate tensions following the US designation of Nigeria as a country of particular concern.
Speaking in Ilorin, Kwara State, Saliu recommended that Tinubu direct the Armed Forces to target groups driving insecurity, convene top religious leaders to highlight the consequences of their followers’ actions, and establish a high-powered committee to investigate and report on US claims.
He also urged the president to issue an ultimatum to insurgents to surrender arms within a week, restrain inflammatory statements from public officials, and create a centralized body to coordinate responses and information.
Saliu emphasized focusing on internal reforms, publicly disclosing progress, and appointing influential Nigerians to engage directly with Washington. He further recommended addressing economic hardship, avoiding support for groups critical of the US, and engaging countries whose citizens participate in illegal mining that fuels insecurity.
“A careful consideration of these points can help alleviate escalating tensions. Nigeria-US relations have historically been tense, though not to this current level,” Saliu noted.
