THE National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve their ongoing dispute and avert another shutdown of public universities.
In a statement on Wednesday, NANS President Olushola Oladoja warned that students would not tolerate another prolonged disruption to the academic calendar, noting that two uninterrupted sessions under President Bola Tinubu’s administration had restored some stability to the sector.
Oladoja commended recent government education reforms but blamed miscommunication and delays in implementing agreements for reigniting tensions with ASUU. He revealed that a planned meeting between both sides failed due to procedural lapses and urged the government to immediately reconvene talks.
He also appealed for President Tinubu’s direct intervention, saying:
“Now is the time for dialogue and decisive action — the future of millions of Nigerian students depends on it.”
ASUU began a warning strike on Monday after a 14-day ultimatum expired, demanding full implementation of past agreements, payment of withheld salaries, and revitalisation of public universities. The action has already disrupted examinations in several campuses nationwide.
