Nigeria Urges Global Unity To Tackle Growing Displacement Crisis
By HALIMA TAKWAS
NIGERIA has called for stronger international solidarity and innovative solutions to address the worsening global displacement crisis.
Speaking at the 76th Session of the Executive Committee Meeting of the High Commissioners’ Programme in Geneva, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Yakubu Adam Kofar-Mata, said the scale of global displacements now exceeds the capacity of individual nations and aid agencies.
He noted that limited donor funding and stretched humanitarian resources have left host communities struggling to support vulnerable populations. Despite these challenges, Kofar-Mata reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to protecting refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, and internally displaced persons (IDPs).
He called for stronger global partnerships, shared responsibility, digital innovation, and private sector involvement to build sustainable humanitarian solutions.
As of September 2025, Nigeria hosts over 142,000 refugees, 24,000 returnees, and 6.7 million IDPs, all protected under national frameworks such as the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs Act of 2022.
Kofar-Mata also highlighted Nigeria’s progress in implementing the Global Refugee Compact and developing State Action Plans to support displaced persons, urging the international community to match Nigeria’s efforts with renewed global cooperation.
