Kano Governor Seeks Law to Ban Same-Sex Marriage, Immoral Practices
KANO State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the submission of a bill to the State House of Assembly aimed at prohibiting same-sex marriage and other practices deemed immoral in the state.
The decision was taken during the 31st State Executive Council meeting, held at the Government House Annex in Kwankwasiyya City, according to a statement released by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
Governor Yusuf stressed that his administration would uphold Islamic values and cultural traditions, vowing not to allow acts that undermine the moral fabric of Kano society. The bill specifically addresses same-sex marriage and practices locally referred to as “Madugo” and “Liwadi”, which he described as prohibited under religious and cultural laws.
“Under no circumstance will we allow acts that contradict our religion and traditions to take root in Kano. This government is duty-bound to protect the moral integrity of our society,” the governor said.
If passed into law, the bill will enforce strict legal penalties on individuals found guilty of engaging in or promoting the banned practices.
Governor Yusuf expressed confidence that the Assembly would treat the legislation with urgency, describing it as essential to protecting the moral and social wellbeing of the state.
