Inside The Agbor Train Disaster: Officials, VIPs & 482 Passengers Caught In Deadly Derailment

A Journey Turned Disaster on the Warri–Itakpe Corridor
WHAT began as a routine passenger trip along the Warri–Itakpe rail line ended in tragedy near Agbor, Delta State, when a train carrying 482 people derailed, leaving four passengers dead and dozens injured. The incident involved multiple coaches overturning in what authorities later described as a major rail emergency.
Among those on board were prominent figures including Senator Ede Dafinone representing Delta Central and former Delta State SSG, Patrick Ukah—an indication of the wide public reach of the ill-fated journey.
The Moment the Train Left the Tracks
Preliminary transport ministry reports confirmed that four coaches capsized while one coach derailed entirely during the early hours of Monday. Eyewitness accounts and early statements suggest a sudden disruption along the corridor, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
Emergency responders were quickly mobilised, with the Delta State Government, NEMA, FRSC, police, NSCDC, and NRC rescue teams all converging on the site. The evacuation effort lasted until about 6:30 p.m., according to officials.
Death Toll, Injuries, and Survivor Breakdown
Authorities confirmed that four people died in the crash—two adult females, one adult male, and an infant. At least 24 passengers sustained serious injuries, while several others suffered varying degrees of harm.
All injured victims were transported to medical facilities in Agbor for urgent care. One NRC staff member also suffered a traumatic limb injury but is reported to be in stable condition.
High-Profile Passengers and Public Concern
The presence of Senator Dafinone and former SSG Patrick Ukah among the passengers has intensified public attention on the crash. Though both reportedly survived, the incident underscores the vulnerability of all passengers regardless of status.
The Federal Ministry of Transport and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) expressed condolences and confirmed that the full passenger manifest has been retrieved for verification and accountability.
Investigation Underway Amid Safety Questions
Officials have launched a full investigation into the cause of the derailment. While no conclusion has been reached, stakeholders have renewed concerns about rail safety on the Warri–Itakpe line, especially given past derailment incidents linked to vandalism and infrastructure stress.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to properly identify all victims and ensure accountability as recovery operations continue.
