Ram Prices Surge Ahead Of Sallah, Stir Widespread Concern In Abuja Markets

Rising Ram Prices Stir Concern Ahead of Eid-el-Kabir
Sharp Increase in Market Prices
RESIDENTS and traders in Dei-Dei and Kubwa communities in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory have raised concerns over the steep rise in ram prices ahead of the upcoming Eid-El-Kabir celebration.
Market checks show that the cost of rams has risen significantly compared to previous years, creating anxiety among Muslim faithful preparing for the annual religious sacrifice.
Cost Burden on Households
Many residents say the price surge is making it increasingly difficult for families to fulfil the traditional obligation of slaughtering rams during Sallah.
A medium-sized ram now sells between ₦500,000 and ₦700,000 depending on size and breed, a sharp jump from last year’s average of under ₦400,000.
Families Consider Alternatives
In Kubwa, residents say they are already adjusting plans due to financial pressure from food inflation, transportation costs, and school fees.
Some households are now considering pooling resources with relatives or opting for smaller animals to manage costs.
Worries Ahead of Festive Period
Buyers described the situation as discouraging, with fears that many families may be unable to participate fully in the ritual this year.
Despite the concern, some residents remain hopeful that prices may ease slightly as more livestock enters the market closer to the festival.
