Carnival Calabar Sets 31st May For 2026 Theme Reveal In Lagos

Countdown Begins for 2026 Carnival Calabar
PREPARATIONS for the 2026 edition of Carnival Calabar have gathered momentum, with organisers announcing 31 May 2026, as the date for the official unveiling of the event’s theme.
The unveiling ceremony is scheduled to take place at Eko Hotels & Suites, marking a key milestone in the build-up to what is widely regarded as Africa’s biggest street carnival.
Theme to Shape Creative Direction
According to the Carnival Calabar Commission, the annual theme unveiling plays a central role in shaping the creative framework of the festival.
It provides guidance for participating bands in areas such as choreography, costume design, storytelling, and artistic expression, all of which culminate in the grand December celebrations in Cross River State.
Global Stakeholders to Converge in Lagos
The unveiling event is also expected to attract a wide range of stakeholders, including sponsors, tourism investors, and members of the diplomatic community.
Among the dignitaries billed to attend are Gautier Mignot, the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, who will serve as Special Guest of Honour, and Paulo Santos as Guest of Honour.
Digital Expansion Strategy in Focus
As part of preparations, the Commission’s Chairman, Gabe Onah, led a delegation on a strategic engagement with media executives, including Kemi Okunola and Busola Tejumola.
Discussions centred on expanding the carnival’s global visibility through digital innovation, particularly enhanced streaming and online audience engagement.
A Cultural Powerhouse with Global Appeal
Over the years, Carnival Calabar has evolved into a major tourism and cultural export, drawing millions of visitors annually.
The event features vibrant street parades, music, dance, and cultural showcases, reinforcing its status as one of West Africa’s most significant cultural festivals.
